History of Burley Idaho
Burley, Idaho is a small town located in the beautiful Snake River Valley, surrounded by fertile farmland and scenic mountains. Its history is filled with colorful stories of pioneers, homesteaders and Native Americans.
Burley was originally called Hunter, for brothers John and Bob Hunter who were two of the first white settlers to arrive in the area in 1879. The brothers settled on land that would later become an important part of the town.
In 1880, another settler named Alexander Maxwell arrived in the area. Maxwell was a Civil War veteran and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. He hoped the dry climate of Idaho would help his health problems. He also had an extensive fruit tree nursery back in Illinois and brought several hundred of his trees with him to plant in Idaho.
A post office was established at Hunter, Idaho on June 11, 1881 with William C. Thompson as postmaster. A school district was established October 4th of that same year, but classes were held in private homes until 1882 when a schoolhouse was built by John Hunter on his land at what is now 3rd South and Main Street.
Burley, Idaho was established in 1905 by the Oregon Short Line Railroad on its way to Butte, Montana. The railroad built a roundhouse in Burley, a small depo, and a siding. This made it easier for the railroad to send railcars back and forth along the line.
The area was originally known as "Rabbit Town" due to the presence of so many jackrabbits near the tracks. The name was changed in 1906 after Burley, Utah because of confusion with other places in Idaho that also had the name Rabbit Town.
