History of Christiansburg Virginia

The Town of Christiansburg was founded in 1792, when Colonel William Preston bought the land from Thomas Ingles, the father of Mary Draper Ingles. He laid out the town and named it for his friend, Colonel William Christian. The first courthouse was built in 1842. The town incorporated in 1866.

In 1876, the railroad came to Christiansburg, and the town became an important trade center for farmers and lumbermen of the New River Valley. Christiansburg also became a popular railroad resort town with several hotels to serve visitors attending Virginia Tech football games.

Christiansburg continued to grow as a trade center throughout the 20th century, with many retail stores and restaurants located along Main Street and Peppers Ferry Road. In 1956, when Montgomery County was formed from parts of Floyd County and Giles County, Christiansburg was designated as its county seat.

The county courthouse on Main Street was replaced by a new one just off Main Street in 1974. The old courthouse is now used as an arts center and museum.
