Daphne, AL settled on in 1763 by the French, after losing Canada to the English, and was named after Daphne, a character in Greek mythology. It was a small settlement that grew over time to become the county seat of Baldwin County. The area was mostly made up of farmers who grew cotton and corn. The Battle of Mobile Bay happened off shore during the Civil War in 1864. The Union fleet was commanded by David Farragut, who secured control of Mobile Bay for the Union. The Union landing at Fort Morgan would lead to Mobile's fall in 1865.

Daphne has a rich history dating back to its incorporation in 1891 when it was known as the Town of Daphne. Prior to 1891 however, Daphne's humble beginnings can be traced back to at least 1763 when French settlers established an encampment near Lake Forest Yacht Club on Malbis Plantation Road. Malbis Plantation Road itself was originally known as “Frenchmans Road” and still serves as one of the longest thoroughfares in Baldwin County serving as a direct route from Interstate 10 through the heart of downtown Daphne all the way to Point Clear and Mobile Bay.

Daphne became an incorporated community in 1911 and was annexed by Fairhope in 1915. It regained its status as an independent town in 1918. The town has a total area of 36 square miles and is bordered by Fairhope, Spanish Fort, Montrose, and Loxley. In 2010 it had a population of about 22,000 people with about 8600 households.

Daphne is known as "The Jubilee City" because jubilee occurs regularly along its shores when bay waters recede and leave behind shrimp and blue crabs. This happens along the entire coast of southwest Alabama, but Daphne has been noted as one of five locations where this phenomenon occurs regularly due to a bend in local waterways that creates a narrow channel for tidal flow. Daphne's official jubilee season starts in May and continues through October. During this time, visitors can gather at Bayfront Park to watch the jubilee occur.
