Hickory, North Carolina, is a mid-sized city in the western section of the state's Catawba County. It is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is only about an hour away from Charlotte and Asheville. Hickory was founded in 1863 as a stop on a railroad line connecting Charlotte to Morganton and Lenoir. In true Wild West style, the town was originally named Hickory Tavern for its first establishment, which was created to serve travelers on the railroads.

Hickory has been known for its furniture manufacturing since the late 1800s and still claims one of the largest furniture markets in the world, although it has lost much of its production to foreign countries. Hickory also hosts NASCAR's regional racing circuit and provides access to Lake Norman and Lake Hickory water sports.

The city's first school opened in 1852. The approximate population for this time period was 1,200 people. The Catawba County Court House, built in 1854, is still standing today. Hickory was incorporated as a town on March 4, 1863 by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly.

The first train arrived at Hickory Tavern on April 5, 1859. It connected the city with Newton and Statesville to the west and Lenoir to the east.

The City of Hickory was officially chartered by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly in December 1873. By that time it had become a thriving trading center for furniture manufacturing, with almost 150 factories employing more than 2,000 workers.
