History of Riverton Wyoming

Fremont County was created by the legislature of the Wyoming Territory on March 5, 1884. Lander was designated as its county seat. The county was named for John C. Frémont, an American explorer and politician. One year later on February 18, 1885, Riverton was founded as an agricultural community along the Wind River with a post office being established April 29 of that year.

In 1906, Fremont County lost territory when Hot Springs County was created by the legislature of the new state of Wyoming. After that Riverton competed with Lander to become Fremont County's new county seat. In 1909 a special election selected Riverton as the new seat, and the county government moved from Lander to Riverton in 1910. (Lander is now home to many state offices for western Wyoming.)

The original city limits were a one-mile square in the center of town. In 1913, the city limits were extended to their present boundaries.

The first school was located on the west side of Main Street between Second and Third, where the Post Office now stands. When the town was incorporated, there was a population of about 200 people. There were less than 20 houses and one store or business establishment for every 200 residents.

In 1924, a new high school was built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) at a cost of $300,000. A bond issue covered part of the expense, but most of it was paid with federal funds.

In 1936 and 1937, two more major projects were completed: The City Auditorium (now known as the Wind River Hotel & Casino) and Central Wyoming College (now known as Central Wyoming College). Both were started as WPA projects but later were completed with local tax revenue.
