History of Silver Bay Minnesota

Silver Bay, Minnesota is a town with a distinct history and present. The town has gone from being a logging town to a port city to a tourist town and now an ore processing center.

However, the name "Silver Bay" was not always the name of this town on Lake Superior. The town was first called Animikie (Ojibwe for "silver") by the Native Americans who lived in the area. Later it was renamed Silver Creek, but there was already another town by that name. So it was renamed Silver Bay in 1891.

The first industries in this area were logging and fishing due to the abundance of white pine trees and Lake Superior fish. Then shipping took over as an industry when the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad built its tracks from Two Harbors to Silver Bay in 1892.

After that, tourism became the main source of income for Silver Bay residents when the railroad opened up the area for travelers to visit. These visitors were attracted by waterfall attractions like Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse, which is still popular today.

But mining ultimately became the primary industry in Silver Bay when iron mining started again at Taconite Harbor in 1957.
