The city was founded in the early 1830s as a stop on the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway. The city was named after Colonel Nathanial Long, a hero of the Texas Revolution. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due in part to the discovery of oil in the region.
