History of Middletown Connecticut

Middletown was incorporated in 1651, and included parts of the surrounding area. It was named after the English "middle town," meaning the location on the Connecticut River halfway between Windsor and Saybrook. Middletown was a prosperous trade center at the height of the trade in England's American colonies, and they even had a Royal Charter as early as 1650.

By 1664, it was named as one of Connecticut's four townships (along with Windsor, Wethersfield, and Hartford), and was granted a legal document known then as a "town patent" by King Charles II. While New Haven Colony had been established to the south in 1638 by English Puritans from up the Connecticut River in Springfield, Massachusetts, it never officially merged with Connecticut Colony. The "townships" became independent entities with their own self-government.

Middletown also became home to Yale College (now Yale University), which was founded in nearby Killingworth in 1701 when British colonial clergymen led by James Pierpont moved it from Old Saybrook to New Haven; this is why Middletown originally called itself the "halfway point" between Windsor and Saybrook.

Middlesex County was established on May 2, 1785 from Hartford and New Haven counties. The original boundaries of Middlesex stretched all the way from Long Island Sound to the Massachusetts border. When most of what is now Tolland and Windham counties were separated from Middlesex, those new counties were given their own judges of probate.

As of the 2010 census, Middletown had a population of 47,648; making it Connecticut's 17th largest city (by population). Middletown is home to Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college with nationally recognized programs in science, engineering, social studies and the arts. In 2013 Bloomberg Businessweek named Middletown as the best place to raise kids in Connecticut.
