History of Novi Michigan

The history of Novi dates back to 1832, when a group of pioneers from Farmington and Livonia purchased land from the federal government for the purpose of building a farming community. They named it Novi for the six mile road built between Northville and South Lyon. However, Novi was not officially incorporated as a village until 1958. Since then, this city has experienced tremendous growth with its population exceeding 55,000 people and its businesses increasing to over 6,000 establishments. In 1965, Novi became a city and has continued to grow into a thriving economy while still maintaining its historical charm. Today, Novi is home to many shopping malls including Twelve Oaks Mall (the largest in the state), many restaurants and hotels, recreational activities such as golfing or bowling, and numerous events throughout the year.

The first settlers arrived in Novi in 1824, and the city's history has been one of steady growth and expansion ever since. Novi was incorporated as a village in 1869, when the area had just over 400 residents. The town was named Novi because it was located on the Grand River Road (now Grand River Ave.) between Northville and Farmington, two popular villages at the time. Early settlers were farmers, who found it difficult to make a living from farming alone and so began making trips to Detroit to sell their milk, butter and eggs. In order to cut down on travel time, these early farmers would often take their goods into Detroit on horseback or by oxcart a trip that took a full day or more then return home the same way after selling their goods. As the 20th century progressed, Novi grew quickly as new businesses and factories opened in the area. The village became a city in 1969, when the population had ballooned to more than 3,000 residents quite an increase from just 30 years before!
