History of Ponce City Market Georgia

Ponce City Market is a mixed-use development located in a historic building in Atlanta, with national and local retail anchors, restaurants, a food hall, boutiques and offices, and residential units. It is located where the Old Fourth Ward meets Poncey-Highland and the Virginia Highland neighborhoods.

Originally named Ponce de Leon Amusement Park, it was built on the location of the Ponce de Leon Springs amusement park. The building was built in 1926 as a Sears, Roebuck and Company store, warehouse and regional office. It is 2,100,000 square feet (200,000 m2) in size. The building's lot covers 16 acres (6 ha). Sears closed its operations here in 1979.

In 1990, developer Wayne Mason had the building added to the National Register of Historic Places. Three years later he sold it for $12 million to Jacoby Development Inc., which put up $260 million to turn it into a mixed-use development. The renovation started in 2010 by South City Partners led by Jamestown Properties and North American Properties Atlanta with architect Smallwood Reynolds Stewart Stewart & Associates Inc., which also renovated mixed-use property Atlantic Station.

In 2011, Jamestown Properties bought City Market from Tyler Perry Studios for $27 million and began a redevelopment project for the space. The property was renamed Ponce City Market as a nod to its history as a trading center and shopping venue for Atlantans. Many people simply refer to it as "PCM." The building reopened in 2014 as a modernized office building & retail destination.
