History of St. Clair Shores Michigan

St. Clair Shores, the northernmost of Macomb County's communities on Lake St. Clair, originated as a summer resort for Detroiters in the late 1800s. The first permanent settler is believed to have been an Irishman named William Conner who built a log cabin on what is now Jefferson Avenue between Nine and Ten Mile Roads in 1818.

The township was organized in 1879 but was not incorporated until October 20,1924. The St. Clair Shores area is best known for its nautical theme, with more than 144 miles of shoreline and 25 parks situated around lakes and waterways. St. Clair Shores was one of the first suburbs north of Detroit along the shores of Lake St. Clair and has become one of the most populated lakeside communities in Michigan and home to more than 60,000 residents living within 15 square miles.
