St. Cloud has a rich history that goes back to the days of early Native American settlers, who called this area home for thousands of years.

The Timucan Indians were the first known inhabitants in what is now Osceola County. In 1513, Ponce de Leon arrived in Florida and claimed it for Spain. The Spanish failed to establish settlements in the area because of frequent attacks by the local Native Americans.

In 1836, Florida became a territory of the United States, and settlers began to arrive in what would become St. Cloud, which was then part of Orange County. W.P. Willson built a homestead near Deer Park (now Kissimmee) in 1842; his property would later be incorporated as St. Cloud by five Ohio businessmen in 1909 who wanted a town halfway between Orlando and Tampa where farmers could sell their produce and cattle ranchers could buy supplies for their herds.
